After talking to one of my students, I decided to give a real try to meditation using meditation apps.

So, on a Saturday morning, I registered to both Calm and Petit Bambou. They both have a free and a Premium program. So I will firstly test both of their free programs.  They both last 10 minutes a day and are free for a week

A good start

My first day was quite good using Petit Bambou. I like the voice of the speaker. She explained how to sit, what should be our mindset before the meditation. She even gave a little story to remind us that all thoughts are temporary and that we have to let them go without following them with our eyes when they go away.

I have to say that this 1st meditation period didn’t seem that long to me, and I was even surprised when she said that we could open our eyes and stay relaxed. I guess it’s because she gave us some indications during the 1st part of the meditation on how to breathe to keep us “busy”.

Of course, it was a first meditation session and of course, my mind was not fully still but I did enjoy those 10-minutes more than all my other attemps to meditate alone before.

To be fully honest, I did this meditation right after my 30-minute-yoga training, which probably helped me relax better as well.

So let’s see how it goes for the rest of the 1st week 🙂

I have now completed the first 3 days of this meditation app and until now I am quite satisfied. You feel good afterwards.

Meditation is not that strict as we think!

I have to admit that I had always thought that meditation was not for me, well, this app is making me little by little change my mind.

What I like is that the girl repeats at the beginning and at the end of the session, that we shouldn’t feel guilty to have some thoughts during the meditation time. She explains us how to just accept them without paying more attention to them.

As I said on the first day of trial, I am surprised each time that the 10 minutes have already run out! During the session, I don’t feel bored, I just concentrate on my body and on myself for 10 minutes.

I really like each session I did. The 2nd session was a focus on each small part of the body, like a mental body scan and the 3rd session was a focus on each of my senses. I like to use those tools to meditate and connect more with myself.

In fact, it makes me think that we do have a misconception about meditation nowadays. We think it’s to sit still and do nothing, but it’s not necessarily this. It’s more something to recenter on yourself, on your body, on your senses.

So, my advise for you for meditation, don’t be too harsh on yourself, accept this time as a time that you are giving yourself to recenter and don’t feel guilty to have some thoughts during the meditation, just let them go away.

How our life affects our mind

My fourth session was the toughest one and showed me how your state before doing the meditation can affect it. I had indeed worked all day on some difficult stuff for my business, had headaches during the day and was not feeling very well because of it. Even though, I had already found a solution on my business problems and reached my goals for the day in this area, my head was full of thoughts and not quiet at all.

That’s why, during this session, I could see how it was much more difficult for me to relax, I was feeling that the 10 minutes were lasting forever, I was much more impatient. I could see how I had in a way lost control of my inner-self.

Is yoga enough for me as a meditation time?

Well, I have to admit that after a week of trial on Petit Bamboo, this app didn’t convince me enough to do meditation on a regular basis as an add-on to my yoga daily routine.

Why? Because the meditations were quite similar all the time, so for me, I didn’t see the real need to do it every day. Moreover, as I have already my daily yoga routine, I didn’t get enough out of it to feel a change.

Let’s try Calm App and see whether I will be more appealed to it.

Did you try some meditation apps? Which one would you recommend ?
